O'Neil tried out for her third series of Canadian Idol in the early months of 2005 while still in high school. She made it into the top 100 courtesy of the judges' excitement for the performance. O'Neil received high praise by the judges. However, she experienced substantial losses during the top 10 weeks as well as the Top 9 of the Finals, when she fell into the bottom 3 and bottom 2 and bottom 2 respectively. Judges were shocked by the results and advised the viewers to vote for contestants like Melissa, who had the best singing abilities. With consistently excellent performances throughout the contest, O'Neil never again finished among the bottom three. After two more breathtaking performances on September 7, 2005, the day that O'Neil along with Rex Goudie were able to make it into the final two, the judge Werner said that newspaper headlines were going to read O'Neil beat Goudie to win the title of third Canadian Idol, the first female winner, and also the youngest winner of the show's history . O'Neil received a rousing ovation from Canadian Premier Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
